The Need for Ear Plugs

Jun 23 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

Ear plugs are used for hearing protection, but another popular use is for maintaining mental health! To be sure, a great number of folks actually enjoy a riot. But a significant number of people also need real peace and quiet — even in the city?

You get ear plugs, that’s all! Inexpensive, they’re practically free when compared to what you get, some peace of mind. It ain’t just roommates, either, but neighbors – and not just apartment-dwellers but folks who live in houses: such is life in the big city!

And that’s where ear plugs can help. They should be helpful to some degree, if not a perfect final solution. That’s because the ones you’re likely to find are only good for blocking up to 33 dcB of noise, which is about the level of a typical conversation. For something stronger, specialty models are necessary, but these are nowhere near as easily found on the marketplace.

But it may be impractical to wear them continuously. While many people get used to them, others find the practice increasingly irritable, especially when reusing ear plugs. Of course, they shouldn’t be necessary to being with. But hardly anyone anywhere believes noise pollution to be a serious isse, one warranting official action. Believe it or not, even the city with the toughest noise pollution laws in the country, New York, treats the matter seriously enough. In fact, while most noise complaints involve residential neighbors, it is precisely this class of disputes that authorities there avoid handling!

Jean-Paul Sartre famously remarked that “hell is other people;” this may explain whyThe Big Apple is so reluctant to intervene between warring neighbors, which is but hell multiplied exponentially! So what, then, does their vaunted noise pollution laws actually do? What is Mayor Bloomberg’s signature 311 civic complaints hotline doing besides simply giving out information?

Well, enough people tolerate noise well enough such that it isn’t much of a problem. That’s the sad truth, in the final analysis: most folks just don’t mind it. Hence, some things will never change. Mental sanity is not something that’s highly valued; indeed, not many know what true sanity is nor how noise plays an important part in preventing it!

Changing Time for Blank Envelopes

Jun 21 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

Wait til computers really take over! Forget blank envelopes! They’ll be history. All those science fiction movies that depict a world taken over by computers show something really diabolical, but real life is at once more imaginative and less exciting (at this point!). Well, actually, for those thrown out of work by computer automation, it’s probably just about as sinister, if they really thought about it.

Technology displacing workers and whole sectors of the economy is nothing new, of course, and blank envelopes are often made overseas these days anyway – and even then, it will be machines that do the making. Whereas making paper was once a craft in its own right, it’s all done automatically by machines now. But even these overseas workers will be thrown out of work soon enough thanks to all the wireless communications that’s revolutionized just about every facet to how people interact.

Why write a letter and stick it in an envelope when e-mail and the like can transmit your message so much faster? Nothing to be printed out, no postage to fumble around for, and never a necessary wait on a response – never mind having to go out and do a drop-off at the nearest mailbox! Well, not unless one’s corresponding with a sloth in Australia!

Demand for blank envelopes is at the lowest point yet. It’s now hard to find them, even, and one must resort to dedicated stationary stores oftentimes. And it’s all due to the computer revolution that’s totally changed just about every aspect of our lives. It’s nothing like the first envelopes found in Mesopotamia, which by our modern reckoning resemble pottery in practically every which way, made as they are of clay and requiring drying and even baking to be “sealed” – not to mention a right ol’ cracking in order to be opened!

There is nothing new, then, to the impact of technology. It is, moreover, dramatic in impact but not necessarily in that immediate, visceral way of fiction. Thus, instead of space travel, the year 2001 (as opposed to the eponymous movie by famed filmmaker Stanley Kubrick) offers us the worldwide web; instead of moon bases, we USAF Predator and Reaper drones; instead of artificial intelligence, we get cell phones.

So no more blank envelopes. That’ll be one of the most prevalent effects of computers taking over even more than they already have by now. Soon there won’t be any envelopes at all in the whole world!

GSM Cell Phones for Religious Nuts

Jun 17 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

When trying to find GSM cell phones, get only one that will really be useful to you. Of course, this ain’t exactly news, yet you’d be surprised how many people fall prey to marketing hype and purchase handsets completely at odds with what best suits their actual real-world usage patterns. Ironically enough, the widespread availabilty of mobile technology may be a contributing factor to such phenomena: what the French call an embarass de riches. This is to say, giving people too many choices actually hampers their decision-making.

People who research consumer behavior know all about this situation. Whether it’s GSM cell phones or just about anything else, really, most people will naturally feel more and more anxious when presented with an ever more wider variety of choices. But while that may seem strange, it actually makes a certain sense, in the final analysis. After all, about half the population — those typically called “guys” — hate to shop. And why’s that? Generally, it has to do with instant gratification. They want to “get it over with.” It doesn’t matter if the purchase is simple and straightforward, eve with something such as picking up groceries on the way home from work. Imagine how much more annoying it could be when it comes to technology products!

Yes, guys like their toys and so they will love electronic ones, too. Guys like objects; they like controlling things. But modern technology has lead to an incredible variety of features, feature-sets which only hard-core geeks would love spending time poring over…and few people of either sex really want to spend so much time over what is basically a common everyday object, which most consumer electronics are.

Yes, then there are the ladies, the female half of the human race. Those who usually enjoy shopping, unless it’s for electronics and such.

The existence of so many people who do not care about cell phones is an important fact. No wonder, isn’t it, that marketing hype is resorted to in order to hasten the purchase? And so people may wind up with thingamajigs that not only do not help them, but may actually hinder their actual wireless communications needs!

This means that a bit of self-awareness is important when looking to buy a cell phone. What exactly do you need to do with a handset anyway? Do you really need all those features? Must you have an on-board radio? Are games that important? If you absolutely need data capabilities, do you also have to have WiFi or would your carrier’s cellular network be enough?

Standard Business Cards Take New Forms

Jun 15 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

Standard business cards are exchanged every day by Japanese from all walks of life. Did you know that? Carrying cards for purposes of introduction has long been a popular custom in that country, not just for salarymen but many other kinds of people as well. In fact, the practice is so commonplace that it’s become quite the stereotype for Japanese people the world over!

The movie “Good Morning” parodies this cultural tendency to substitute meaningless signs and symbols for real conversation and real connections. The social milieu depicted in the film is that of postwar Japan in the 1950s, though relatively few signs of want are to be found and indeed no mention whatsoever of war. The film is notable for humorously noting such meaningless exchanges of social etiquette, a routine very much related to the practice of trading business cards.

It’s true that human beings are naturally drawn to abstractions and thus sign and symbol-making. Yet traditionally in Japan such impulses have achieved a very developed form, such that the very language makes constant use of different suffixes and the like in order to denote social standing between speakers!

And so today’s practice of trading business cards. It’s the ultimate in getting to know one another in a way that’s really important: one’s relative ranking! This is Japan, after all, a country with a cultural heritage that doesn’t pretend to be egalitarian and so has no qualms about formally identifying people’s social standings.

You could call it a rather militaristic mindset, even. It isn’t limited to Japan, of course – at least not in kind, though few other places can match it to the degree of its intensity, the degree of its prevalence and common observation.

One most conducive to modern business.

Business cards. Yes, too much can be made out of such simple things. But so can too little be; so is it possible that important cultural currents are ignored.

Americans trade business cards quite often, too. Indeed, the practice originated in the West, with Europe and America. But there isn’t the same “moral authority,” for lack of a better phrase – there isn’t the same “cultural force” (for continuing want of a good way of putting things) – attached to the business card in the West as there is in Japan.

Understanding Decreased Blood Flow

Jun 10 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

Uncertainties about blood flow are more apt to be relevant to older folks, though young people with particular medical conditions may also be at risk. A lot of causes can be at work in reduced flow, but it does seem to happen with advancing age. But you do not have to become overly nervous about it if you’re found to have decreased flow. Behavior and means are obtainable to increase the flow when needed. The truth is, some easy modifications in habits can have a big result on your blood flow.

The positives of consuming enough water are well identified to most of us. We recognize that our bodies are generally water, an incredible fact, but many of us don’t understand just what this means. No doubt it matters very much to provide our bodies what it wants to function efficiently. There is discussion on the previous criterion of eight ounces of water every day. Now experts tell us to drink enough so that we don’t ever feel thirsty. Mild dehydration has already begun when we experience the sensation of thirst. We should likewise be sure to get most of our fluids from plain water rather than other, less healthy sources. Consume water throughout the day. Make sure that it’s free from impurities.

The US has had a tendency toward an inactive lifestyle for many years, even though there are millions who are active. But it is quite common for older adults to begin settling into a sedentary life. This is never a good idea for general health. But it’s particularly bad for the blood circulation. When you move your body, you make your muscles work. You shouldn’t be surprised to learn that this improves the circulation. The act of expanding and contracting your muscles, and increasing heart rate, will automatically get the blood moving more. Take a walk. It will get your blood moving better every time.

Make sure you’re aware of how blood circulation can be impeded by unfortunate lifestyle choices. An unhealthy diet is one of them, and as you know that can cause many other problems. Your body requires high-quality sources of energy and nutrition in order to function smoothly. Sugars and fats do supply energy, but they usually aren’t considered healthy on their own because they often supply “empty calories,” devoid of the minerals and vitamins you need. To better your blood flow, be sure to incorporate all those elements — get enough water, enough nutrients, and ample exercise.

If there’s a lot of tension in your life, believe it or not, this could also lessen your blood flow. If you reside in a continuous state of tension, the stress hormones produced in the body can actually damage the body itself. Among the effects of tension is restriction of your cardiovascular system. That stems from the stress hormones which are currently in your blood stream. Through this, the inclination of your blood to clot along with your blood pressure also go up.

Go Green For The World

Jun 07 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

Global warming and acid rain are but two of the destructive side effects we are presently observing as the result of pollution. It would be marvelous if we could reside on this remarkable planet without destroying it in the process. Visualize wandering around a city center and enjoy clean air comprising no poisonous toxins caused by our pollution, wouldn’t it be great? The thing is, this is no longer feasible; we humans have guaranteed that with the pollution we’ve created we’ll be breathing in airborne poisons, which can impair our habitat and ultimately our health.

All forms of life found in that massive body of water, our oceans, which cover 70% of planet earth’s surface, are being ravaged by pollutants such as oil and chemical spillage, which inevitably affects us as well. The harvesting of fish used to provide many people with livings, but pollution is rapidly putting paid to those livelihoods. Communities have relied on fishing for such a long time, for both food and economic prospects, and now all of this is coming to an end for many. Still fresh in our memories is the Deepwater Horizon spill, which gave ample testimony to the disastrous effect of oil spills, causing the loss of many jobs and costing billions of dollars. So much wildlife died in that incident, not only fish but birds as well, affecting the whole eco system which can cause no end of problems in the food chain. All because of humans and their greed for oil, with virtually no thought, except in hindsight, for Mother Earth and her many other children.

In contrast to investing in the latest green energy methodologies and further research into innovative possibilities, we persist in spending billions of dollars on oil exploration. The prospect of providing massive amounts of green energy is huge, without damaging the environment. One would think it’s a no-brainer, given the possibilities offered by green energy alternatives, along with their being passive towards the environment. Take solar panels by way of example, they will work efficiently in sunlit locations and they can produce electricity as well as heat up water. Wind turbines are another way of managing green energy as they only have to have wind to make them generate energy. The good side of wind turbines is they work 24/7, assuming there is enough wind. Everybody should be aware that the time to put into practice an assertive green energy program is now, given the environmental damage caused by oil, and the limited supply thereof. It is not unthinkable that, maybe the devastation of pollution and global warming could not just be terminated, but possibly reversed.

A lot of short term advantages will accrue to us, and we shall be presenting future generations many benefits. We don’t wish our youngsters to grow up in a world that has erratic weather and horrendous conditions; we want them to grow up in a beautiful world where they can be proud of the planet and all it has to offer. Unfortunately, until we begin living green and nurturing our environment, this won’t happen.

It is going to take time, money and a huge amount of endeavor to try and minimize the damage of our actions on the environment, but it will be worth it.

Going on Holiday at On Off Digital World

Jun 07 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

Check out their front window and you’ll agree that On Off Digital World is full of technological marvels, all the latest in consumer electronics today, though the one thing really keeping them in business is their photography department and all the specialized items they keep in stock there. Located in almost right in the middle of Manhattan, they get a lot of foot traffic from all the tourists who flock to The Big Apple day in/day out. Naturally, folks on vacation aren’t going to spend their precious time bargain hunting for specialized photographic equipment and supplies and therefore often pay whatever the price is in order to get on with their holiday.
