Lesson Plan for Teaching Good Manners to Children:
(Specificly - Shaking Hands)
 
Part 1 : Meeting Adults

Introduction:
 
Ask children if they have ever lost something and looked and looked for it?  Today we are going to hear a story about Denny, who lost something very important.

2. Discussion Questions:
 
a. Denny's Mother said "Manners are something you do for others to
   make them -----. (answer - happy)
b. Denny said a birthday party or a surprise from Grandmother makes
   him feel special and happy.  What makes you feel special and
   happy?
c. What can  you do to make others feel special and happy? (Answer:
    introducing people in a proper way)
d. Why did Grandmother smile after Denny introduced her to Mark?
 
3. Activity:  Shaking Hands
 
a. Teaching children which hand is their "right hand."
b. (optional) Have children shake hands with the child sitting next to
   them.  While doing this, to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb,"
   sing:
 
Please, I want to shake your hand,
shake your hand,
shake your hand.
Please, I want to shake your hand.
So, put your right hand out.
 
4. Activity 4: How far did Grandmother Travel? (optional)
 
a. Download this map of the United States and print out at:
b. Have children draw a line from New York to Florida.  They may also color in
    Florida and New York.
 
5. Follow up Activity
 
a. Each morning when you greet the children, shake hands with each
   one.
b. Each day, go over the dialog of " this is --------,  ----------
   this is --------.
c. Let children demonstrate in random pairs the correct dialog.
d. Let them draw pictures of people shaking hands.
