From our book, Character Keys to a Bright Future:  Betty Two

image001.jpg

It was a small school.   Every day as she was going up the stairs to her third period, this good-looking boy who teased her about her weight was coming down the stairs.  His name was Jason and he was so popular.  She felt her face flush as she reached the second floor and brushed her bangs back.  The hurt felt like a knife piercing her flesh.  It was always hard to concentrate on what was being said in third period.  She had to make herself listen.  If her grades weren’t good, she would have nothing to hang on to.  At least, they can’t make fun of her grades……or could they?

To make matters worse, Betty Sue’s Uncle Nick was coming over tonight.  She had to clean her room and do her homework so that she could help entertain him. It made her a little sad to be around him because her mother said that she looked so much like him.  He was big boned and carried about twenty extra pounds, but it showed up on his short body.  His nose was longer than she thought was attractive.  It was like looking in the mirror.  Why couldn’t she have a cute turned-up nose like her mother and be petite and slim?   No wonder they called her “Betty Two.”  She felt like she was the size of two people.  She could feel her throat tighten as she looked in the mirror and relived the moment on the stairs today.

It was decided.  She was sixteen.  She would quit school and get a job.  Then, later, she would go to night school and get her diploma.  Maybe there people would be kinder.  She would have to work into this gradually.  First, she would be sick for a couple of days, and then she could work up the nerve to talk to her parents.  She didn’t want to hurt them, but going to school every day was like taking a beating...................

This is a story about a teen who experienced bullying. It is a sample of our fine short stories that mirror issues teens are going through each day.  Select Buy Our Book to learn more.
